This is a pivotal chapter in MAKING HEADLINES. It’s where we meet Rachel’s new boss, Helmut Becker – a man with a fierce reputation and someone who Rachel fears could possibly derail her career plans… In the meantime, Rachel also has to tackle yet another emotionally challenging news story.

Career-wise, all her stars seem to be aligned with Rachel winning a minor journalism award and been given a small promotion at work, but emotionally, she’s still adapting to life as a single woman once more. And while all seems to be going well in the office, with even Rob Kingsbury softening his attitude to her, Rachel does tread on the main newsreader Mary Masterson’s toes with a fashion faux pas…
At least you’ll get to hear an entire chapter in one session with this latest instalment being a shorter chapter than usual.
But of course, being an entire chapter HAS meant extra work for Fletch this week – FIVE male characters feature, so he’s been a busy boy indeed.

In the second half of Chapter Six, we see the fallout of Rachel’s first news reading attempts and the reactions from other members of the news team. However, ongoing frustrations about her relationship with Tim continue to weigh on her mind, despite any progress made with her career. As well, a slightly disturbing letter arrives on her desk. There’s one bright moment though – a welcome development in Rachel’s friendship with Mitch…

It was also a busy week for Fletch (husband Alan Fletcher) who had to voice the roles of four male characters. Good to keep him busy now that he’s no longer filming Neighbours!
Chapter Five takes us back in time – two months prior – to an event that happened on a weekend away which became Rachel’s deep, dark secret. It was a difficult scene to write and even more difficult to read!
Scenes that involve physical intimacy are challenging to write because you want them to be authentic without becoming too corny and saccharine. And then you have to find a balance between realism and NOT wanting to sound like something in an X-rated magazine. But you also want the reader to feel the heat of the moment and understand WHY Rachel was able to do what she did. I thought I’d found the right balance ten years ago when I wrote it but having to READ it for this audio book version was another matter altogether… It was quite confronting indeed but I think it’s come together well and I do think my partner in this project (and in life) Alan Fletcher, does a fabulous job as the seductive Damien Wilde!
